Gardening Gone Wrong, Marriage Talks & the World’s Smelliest Fly Trap | Ep. 36

Mitchell Milliron

Episode 36 finds Scarlet and Mitchell recording their second attempt after deciding the first version just wasn't working. What starts as a conversation about Oregon's sweltering summer temperatures quickly spirals into tales of foul-smelling fly traps, overheated chickens, gardening triumphs and squirrel-induced frustration. The episode balances laugh-out-loud moments with honest conversations about marriage, step-parenting, and learning to navigate conflict, before wrapping up with updates from the garden and a few television recommendations.

Scarlet
Hey. Oh, welcome to the show, everybody.

Mitchell
There. I wanted you to give it a shot. Did you does it feel weird to do it that way?

Scarlet
Yes.

Mitchell
Mmm.

Mitchell
Wildberry probiotic.

Scarlet
This is the show, everybody.

Mitchell
This is the show.

Scarlet
a podcast.

Mitchell
You know how it works.

Scarlet
In case you didn’t know.

Mitchell
If you don’t know how it works, then get the heck out. Leave. Let’s do it. We are back. You know I when I relist.

Scarlet
I need this echo to go away. I can’t focus.

Mitchell
What? You need the sound to go away?

Scarlet
The echo To go away.

Mitchell
So but the the audience doesn’t hear the echo. That’s just a fault of the studio. What I was gonna say was this.

Welcome to episode 36, by the way I mean, to you to the listener, you know where we’re at. Uh you you know if you listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, wherever you get your all it’s etc. at infinitum What was I gonna say? Totally forgot.

Doesn’t matter. We’re back. Oh, oh, I was re-listening to some and I say, back in the saddle a lot.

To where I could do I couldn’t tell which episode I was listening to because I heard back in the saddle.

Scarlet
You say the same things a lot.

Mitchell
That’s why I was like maybe you know you should grab the reins today.

Scarlet
Oh I should have Set it.

Mitchell
Well you did I was trying to like nudge you along at the beginning to say back in the saddle. No no no to say your own thing. That’s okay.

Episode thirty-six, cheers, everybody. Um Doing the most with Scarlet Mitchell. You should know that already.

Scarlet
It’s a podcast.

Mitchell
And that means you listen with your ears or you go to YouTube and you watch at Les Cats. Please Actually, you know what? I push this video out.

Spotify wants it. Apple wants the video. Well they don’t want it.

That’s sorry. No, I’m overstepping. They’re like push a video up and clips.

It’s if you want to Apple Podcasts, which I haven’t figured out Spotify will take it. YouTube takes it. Still working on that.

So how are you doing?

Scarlet
I don’t know. It’s a hundred degrees outside. And you’re like, I love it So much. And I secretly like wanna scratch your face.

Mitchell
It’s ninety-four out. Look, you’re in the wonderful warmth of the studio.

Scarlet
you know, worried about the chickens because like the chickens are all at their panting and you were working on installing a fan for them to suck out the hot air, but it’s not Well really is it working?

Mitchell
I don’t know. Because when I thought about it, a fair at this point I think it’s it’s 94 degrees everywhere you go outside. So I’m just moving the air.

So Oh my goodness, why? It’s sorry, that’s a vacuum in the background, everyone. It’s 94 degrees.

It’s sucking 94 degrees out of the chicken house. From the 94 degree air outside into the chicken house is keeping it at a balmy 94 degrees. It’s even it’s not getting hotter.

That’s the good news

Scarlet
I don’t know. I mean I’ve already And then you got this fly trap thing that smells like a dead animal. And yesterday I was like Mitchell, I was in the garden and I was like Mitchell there is something dead under this porch.

I was so for sure. I was like there there really is. Something has crawled under here and died.

You know it’s exactly because I had found the carcass of a rat when I was moving that old wood pile And I was And everybody was like, if you’re gonna get chickens, you’re gonna get rats. Everybody was telling me this. You get chickens, you get rats.

They go after the chicken food, blah blah blah.

Mitchell
And I was there sniffing the inside of her house I was today sniffing everywhere, going under the house trying to and I’ll and I was convinced. I had come to the conclusion. I was like There’s a dead animal carcass inside the wall of our house.

Somewhere near the the back door. That’s what I was at. I was like and I was already I was cursing you under my breath.

‘Cause I was. I was like, good night, why? Not that it would be your fault Somehow I was gonna make it your fault, but it was Why is everything This has been today?

Scarlet
Everything has been my fault.

Mitchell
You getting in the gardening is my fault.

Scarlet
The squirrels digging up your stuff is my fault.

Mitchell
Like it was one more thing But it’s and I can I kept noticing it’s kind of a it’s like a nose level but a little higher you know I kept noticing like the smell was like a little higher than nose level Well I know, but then all of a sudden who Dawn almost instantaneously at the same time we were out there and it was like wait a minute. It’s the fly trap We have a tarot brand fly trap.

Scarlet
I thought of this last night because I looked up at the fly trap and I was like, is it that fly trap that smells like a dead animal? And I was like

Mitchell
I’m sorry, the more we talk about, I’m starting to feel sick. That’s how nasty.

Scarlet
I was like, no, it can’t be that strong And then like as the heat has just like ’cause it’s the kind of heat where the air quality isn’t good today. Yeah. So there’s not and there’s not really a lot of b the air quality’s not good, which means there’s not a lot of breeze.

Right. To like blow the crud out of the air. So it’s all it’s just like a blanket of heat that’s not going anywhere.

Mitchell
It’s the makings of a good movie.

Scarlet
So It’s like it’s made the odor that much stronger.

Mitchell
Right. And it’s just sitting there.

Scarlet
And so today when you were working on the fan and I was back there with you, I was like, it is really bad today. And that’s when I was like thinking to myself, am I sure it’s like I don’t wanna say like is it that fly trap and Michelle say like No. Something about that being stupid. And as I was thinking that you looked up and you were like, oh.

Mitchell
Yeah. There it is. I mixed because the fly trap And for those of you not familiar with the tarot brand, which their ant traps bait is wonderful. The flytrap, like a bottle that you hang, you mix up some powder. And the powder itself apparently is just made up from like cadavers and other dead things because that we smelled it when you put it in.

Scarlet
And I we remember being like But Oh, that’s it reminded me.

Mitchell
I don’t remember what I said it reminded me of, but it all makes sense because if you want to attract flies, you wanna have the smell of dead things, right? Flies are like yeah, we want dead things.

Scarlet
I think we put it in the wrong spot

Mitchell
It was well it it suddenly all made sense because it was like, oh it’s about nose level and higher. But if you looked in it it is nothing but w uh like weird murky water and it’s pure black from all the flies. There’s a lot of flies.

Scarlet
Like bad bees. So as like Max would call them stinging bees.

Mitchell
The um good news is, is it working? The bad news is, is the trade-off worth it? Because I started thinking like I feel like we are pulling flies from like two counties over.

Like like in other words. If we didn’t have the fly trap, would we have as many flies attracted to the area because There are more flies in there than I’ve ever seen in our yard in my life. I know.

Scarlet
But I mean we’ve had some flies because of the chickens.

Mitchell
But the decaying body smells.

Scarlet
Maybe five flies like hovering, not a lot

Mitchell
So I’m yeah. Cause originally when I was shopping for fly traps, I was like, oh, we can get like those sticky ones that you pull down and the flies stick to them. Like those don’t smell. It’s just like You’ve seen those?

Scarlet
Of course.

Mitchell
It’s like the size of a film canister and you uncoil it and you have it.

Scarlet
But like if you s stick those outside, that’s also gonna it’s just gonna get dirt on it

Mitchell
Well, but as opposed to the thing that we have is just like a cadaver scented bottle.

Scarlet
Do they not have Okay, but other companies make them.

Mitchell
I don’t know.

Scarlet
They do, because I had some in my Amazon cart that were not that brand.

Mitchell
But I feel like they’re but it only makes sense If you want to attract flies, you need something that smells like it’s rotting. I feel like that’s a truth. Can we do you want to agree on this truth?

Scarlet
Okay, fine.

Mitchell
I mean flies don’t go like, oh, oh

Scarlet
So what do they put in that those yellow jacket catchers? What sugar water?

Mitchell
I don’t know. The ones that the bag that you hang and then like Yeah, because they had ’em all over Yellow Jacket Farms. Remember we did a whole episode of Yellow Jacket Farms.

Is that the name of the farm? Welcome to Yellow Jacket Farms. We’re guaranteed to get stung.

Scarlet
That’s the farm we went to where I got

Mitchell
No. I don’t know. I don’t remember the donkey farm? The miniature mule farm? No.

Scarlet
No.

Mitchell
It doesn’t matter.

Scarlet
I don’t remember. They do they have like the bikes And the big bouncy things and we went with your kids a few years ago when they were Triskoli Frog Pond. No, but it’s in that area.

Mitchell
Okay, it doesn’t matter. Folks don’t visit uh yellow jacket farms.

Scarlet
Uh but they had those all over.

Mitchell
Yeah. I didn’t notice an odor. But anyway.

So the the tarot effective T-E-R-R-O. Tarot brand effective bait may be too effective. Okay So the good news is everybody we don’t have a dead rotting human corpse in our basement. Because I was I really was I was I was secretly angry at you for no reason.

No no hold on. Listen, hear me out.

Scarlet
If anybody’s wondering how our marriage is doing.

Mitchell
Not good, people. You it’s because you notice the smell. That’s why I’m like So secretly I’m blaming you because you noticed the smell the other day. You’re like you were like, there’s something smells like it’s dead and uh uh last night and I was like, Yeah, I did, but like I feel like

Scarlet
Because I was I was like if anybody can find the dead thing it’s gonna be Mitchell. Mitchell is gonna cause I don’t wanna find the dead thing.

Mitchell
Right. And that’s where I was I was like man is it gonna be a possum is a raccoon? Secretly I was like I hope it’s a squirrel because then I’ll feel like vindicated.

And then it was just a uh flight trip. So there you go. Oh I didn’t even put up the timer.

Scarlet
But you bought because you just had to get your free shipping.

Mitchell
Mm-hmm.

Scarlet
Same-day shipping

Mitchell
Which, by the way, not panning out today. Amazon already said, oops, sorry about that thing we were supposed to send you today, not gonna happen. Thanks, Jeff Bezos Between Jeff and Tim Apple, my life stinks.

Thank you, everyone. And show. Oh.

Okay. Now it was not on the docket, but that’s okay. So 94 degrees.

I love it. You hate it.

Scarlet
I do.

Mitchell
And now we’re in the studio where because I didn’t this is unintended.

Scarlet
It’s also 94 degrees in here.

Mitchell
Unintended recording session. Unintended recording session. I have the 3D printer running Which produces a lot of heat and I didn’t know that, but it’s on a twelve hour print, so oh well.

Scarlet
Okay. Yeah, this is unintended because I will say we are re-recording this. This is true. And this was my call. This is episode 36B.

Mitchell
Point. It’s called 36B, and that’s how I label these. So So now there’s two secret hidden episodes for our Patreon customers. And by the way, if you’re looking for a Patreon, we don’t have a Patreon.

Scarlet
Mitchell thought that he would like unlo also I felt like where are you going? I’m listening Because you hadn’t even done your you just like show up and you’re just like I’m gonna talk about something I don’t even know what this effect is called and I finally looked it up by the way.

Mitchell
Oh

Scarlet
You were just like, I think it’s called this or this or this and I’m like, wow.

Mitchell
He didn’t even bother to like I said I called it Barnum.

Scarlet
Yes.

Mitchell
And what is it called?

Scarlet
You said you said Barnum or Bertram.

Mitchell
Oh my goodness. The Bertram was the guy that did it, but I said it’s called the Barnum effect. So what is the answer

Scarlet
It’s a bar number.

Mitchell
Okay, fair enough.

Scarlet
But still, like you didn’t come in prepared. You didn’t prepare me, and then you put me on the spot. And I just felt like it was a super awkward episode So I was like n and then and then it ends and I was like, as opposed to all the other FSX. No, but I was like I was like, that one was a snooze. I hated it.

Mitchell
To be c like secret episode coming out to our Patreon customers.

Scarlet
I was like, I didn’t even know what to talk about, like It like I didn’t even know what I was talking about. You kinda put me on the spot and I was How do you normally

Mitchell
How do you normally roll into our episodes?

Scarlet
Unprepared.

Mitchell
Okay. And that one was known it was the same as every episode. And now I’m it’s my fault.

Scarlet
I am the one You’re at least a little prepared. I have planted the body. But y even your notes weren’t even researched. Because that’s part of the fun, it isn’t it. Sorry Well, I wasn’t having fun.

Mitchell
It doesn’t have to be fully researched to be fun. We this is not a show about facts. Anyone if you’re a first-time listener, none of this is facts, okay And if you’re a longtime listener, you know this is how we roll, okay? I don’t even start the timer today, okay? That’s how undiscombobulated I am.

Scarlet
Well we do have reservations, so Okay.

Mitchell
So Well what does that mean? You’re since this is a redo 36B, what is on your agenda? I I was like I’m just making this her show.

That’s literally what I said to myself. Oh what? I’m here.

I’ve attended. I did my part. I showed up.

Scarlet
Are you serious? Okay, first of all, you were so like in a state this morning.

Mitchell
Oh, let me tell you, by the way The state you’re speaking of? I was I was about to put my fist through things. Anything. Windows, doors, walls, oh

Scarlet
And it was my fault.

Mitchell
Well, I mean, this is part this part of the ongoing drama of our outdoor life. Remember, we’re doing the most, everyone. If you haven’t caught on, we do the most. We have like 4,000 vacuums, 900 cats. And we have a garden and chickens and kids.

Scarlet
You keep saying we’re doing the most and I’m just like You’re mostly responsible for what? Doing the most.

Mitchell
Of what? All of it. Okay Wow.

So continue. Yes, I was in a state. I was.

Scarlet
I really And I was just I could trying to be in the bathroom alone. And then Max was in there and I was like, get out.

Mitchell
And the cat was in there.

Scarlet
And then cat was in there and then you knocked on the door and started. And I was like, get out.

Mitchell
I needed a someone to I needed uh listen, there was a moment I needed a diffuser. I was I I kid you not.

Scarlet
I might have a And I needed an actual air diffuser.

Mitchell
I might have an anger management issue. And I was so lit up by this whole garden squirrel thing. So Sorry, I’m sorry, I feel like I’m reliving it.

Scarlet
Okay.

Mitchell
And I just needed my I needed my partner. You know you ever have those moments where you’re like, I just need my partner. I need my partner and my partner is in the in having a bowel movement in the restroom at this moment.

It was like take a number two max. It just got done. I knock, I kind of cracked the door.

Kennedy’s in there and I’m like, what is going on?

Scarlet
Because I cannot have a free moment. That’s not a problem.

Mitchell
No one can. No one can in this house. That’s how we roll.

Okay. Sorry. You were telling a story.

Scarlet
Okay. I was gonna was gonna add to that, but you Oh anger management. Yeah. Let’s unpack that because there is something about the people in your family who just don’t address the Feelings you feel as they happen.

Mitchell
I was trying to this morning.

Scarlet
Okay, after you would after you guys let things build and build and build

Mitchell
Nothing had built. I just went out and the squirrels had destroyed all my tiny sproutling arugula and romaine. Not to mention the tribes I’ve been trying to grow for you for like four weeks Sorry. You continue. You were saying.

Scarlet
I’m really sorry about that. I mean And it sadly it just comes with the territory of gardening.

Mitchell
Not really.

Scarlet
Like we’re not the only ones with s with that have these issues.

Mitchell
But I could take care of these issues so long ago.

Scarlet
I told you you could.

Mitchell
I know, but like it’s here’s what’s funny. This is true. The squirrels seem to be around When Max gets up and you get up, if you’re home, at eight thirty to nine thirty.

That’s when they’re around, which I need some private time to take care of business. And then if you’re not here, I don’t want Max to be like, oh daddy has killing squirrels, mommy. Like I don’t need him telling you stories, but you’ve given me the green light To manage our property as I feel like I need to.

To defend our property and garden. And my little baby, my baby romaine. Didn’t even stand a chance this morning.

It happened too so quickly. All of it. I was out there with Max.

We’re working on the fans. Literally not I we come inside for ten minutes and go back out and a squirrel has infiltrated our deck Probably in front of your eyes. Not that you it was not your job.

Scarlet
I’m just saying you were sitting sitting facing a different direction.

Mitchell
I know, but that’s what’s so funny. The squirrel had the audacity to go and destroy everything on the deck while you were there Not on the deck and then leave. And then when I went up there, he just sat on a post out there and mocked me.

Like he mocked me. He just looked at me. And I was there I was without any sort of I didn’t have a broom to throw, I didn’t have anything.

Anyway, you were saying. Can you oh hold on. Here’s what I needed for you to go well one, for you to give me the green light to take care of the squirrels Two, just to be like, that must really hurt to put in so many hours of your life trying to grow things in the garden for me and then have the squirrels.

That must be really frustrating. That’s what I wanted. And you were like, I’m trying to use the restroom.

Give me a moment. I’m laughing now because in fairness, I was asking way too much in that moment. But I’m just saying like you don’t understand the the depth like it doesn’t matter like I’ve put a lot of energy into the garden And the squirrels continue to dig and dig and dig.

Scarlet
I know.

Mitchell
And all my little babies sproutlings. All those little baby aruguli.

Scarlet
We put a nut over just that area.

Mitchell
And the romaine. Max loves romaine, by the way. He’s loves that stuff. Anyway, continue.

Scarlet
Okay.

Mitchell
Your honor. What?

Scarlet
Anger management issues. People in your family builds and builds and builds, and then you know, then this is how there’s a hole in the wall of the garage. And Well, there’s various holes.

Mitchell
Yeah.

Scarlet
This is before my time.

Mitchell
By the way. Fair enough. So that red toolbox in the garage.

Scarlet
Yeah. Because but I don’t know. It’s so weird to me because we handle things as I feel anger, it comes out.

Mitchell
Right.

Scarlet
And then

Mitchell
We all hate it.

Scarlet
Yes. But at least it’s out. Nobody questions how I’m feeling. Probably.

Mitchell
Yeah. Okay.

Scarlet
But eventually they simmer out.

Mitchell
Well, I wasn’t like partially angry and it grew. I was instantaneously angry this morning with the squirrel business.

Scarlet
Okay, yes. Okay.

Mitchell
But I mean, we’re moving on from the squirrels. Okay. Are we? Okay.

Scarlet
Okay. But nobody questions how I feel. But You other people belonging to you.

Mitchell
I feel like I’ve hinted at the squirrel thing being a frustration. Okay, I’m just saying like you’re like Okay, continue. I’m just saying like you’re acting like I’ve never mentioned my frustration with the garden and the squirrels till today.

Scarlet
I know you’ve messed up.

Mitchell
I’m not recording a 36C, by the way.

Scarlet
Okay. No. I’m not asking you to do that. Okay.

Okay, anyways. You don’t express your frustration in the moment and you just bury it and you let it build and you let it build. And I know when something’s wrong.

I knew last Monday when you were mad at me for something, because I feel the energy You’re sitting next to me in bed. You don’t want to hold my hand. You you’d stay on your side of the bed, because we have a split king.

Mitchell
We each have our own bed, technically.

Scarlet
and you just stay on your side. And you don’t even like inch towards me and I’m like, Oh, something’s wrong. Either, you know, he’s seen a text message I’ve sent to my stepson or something’s been it’s I said something out of I said something to upset him and he doesn’t want it and I’ll be like, What’s wrong?

And you’re like, No, nothing. Nothing. And I’m like, just tell me Just because I know, I know, and I probably know what it’s about.

Because I know what I’ve done. And I’ll take ownership if you’re just like Did you do this?

Mitchell
You know what you did.

Scarlet
And I’m gonna be like, yeah, I’m not gonna lie about it. Cause I I’m not that kind of person.

Mitchell
But you have to be asked about it You mean like I like did you turn the internet off last night for somebody?

Scarlet
Yeah. For like Two minutes is all it takes.

Mitchell
I was like, no, it looked like it was on to me, buddy.

Scarlet
It’s usually just a little blip. And then a blip just enough to be like Okay, just a little reminder of like You’re loud. There’s other people in this house.

Mitchell
I’m listening.

Scarlet
And thirty-six C.

Mitchell
I’m I I’m letting you talk. Like why am I always I’m just listening to you talk. So you were saying people in my family or just me or in general?

Scarlet
Just I don’t know I guess it’s just different people. I just would rather just know how people are feeling in the moment for multiple reasons. It it I would it just gets it on the table.

We can talk about it, move on, or else it just simmers And then it doesn’t get talked about and things don’t get better. And it just stays there. And it just adds to like, I don’t know, the scale.

And the scale is heavier and heavier and heavier until I don’t know All all of a sudden it’s like we have to have this family meeting because now we have to unload this scale because it’s gotten too much Okay, it’s it’s too heavy. The energy is too heavy, and we just all gotta put it out on the table because we would have to do that with your with your kids every now and then. We would have to do that.

And like I would just r I’m like I I just wish people would just it it because it’s it’s more humanizing Like like I would rather do that with danger. Like, oh you’re mad at me for this? Tell me.

Just tell me how you’re feeling. Cause it like at least humanizes you and doesn’t it’s not like this disconnect I guess and then all of a sudden I can be like oh okay Like I know you’re a person, but now thank you for telling me that because now I’m remembering that you’re a person with feelings Because when you’re just walking around acting like everything’s great and there’s nothing wrong in your life and Not a care in the world, then okay. So I guess I don’t know.

I just wish I just wish thing people would talk about things as they come. That’s the way that I prefer it. That’s the way my family did it.

Uh maybe anyways.

Mitchell
That was on your list today?

Scarlet
No, it wasn’t. But

Mitchell
Okay, I hear you.

Scarlet
Because it took until last Thursday for me to be like, okay, were you mad at me Monday? And you were like, uh yeah. And I’m and I’m like still You’re like you know, and you then you were like tearful at the bottom of the stairs and we were talking. You’re like, and I’m still frustrated about this and this and this. And I’m like Why don’t we just why do we wait till now to like just hash this out instead of just like do you think now this is a let’s make it apply to people who are listening

Mitchell
Do you think that people though, if I feel like that doesn’t improve anything, then maybe I’m learn maybe my learned behavior is like I just gotta get over it secretly or not so secretly because it’s not gonna change anything. Isn’t that kinda how we all like we all hope that other people’s change, but if they don’t and they don’t, then then you kinda get in that like it doesn’t matter, I just gotta get through this. And I’m I I’m just throwing that out as like so for you, like ’cause sometimes you know we’ll have something you’re like, it doesn’t matter.

You know, do we all feel that way, right? At some point in time, we all in our relationships have that moment where like it doesn’t matter. I’m not gonna share because It hasn’t helped anything in the past.

It doesn’t make my partner, my other person f change their behavior and and that’s not fair to want that. I’m gonna put that out there because like You should hear me, but that I shouldn’t expect you to change because you heard me, right? Or you can disagree with that statement.

I mean I feel like as humans we go like, oh, I’m gonna tell you these problems and then you’re gonna change so we don’t have these problems. That’s not how it really works, right? It’s really like I’m gonna tell you how I feel so at least in the future you can realize how you’re gonna make me feel when you make the same decisions and I don’t know, or is that worse to think like, oh, the other person by by by other people I’m dealing with are actually consciously making the same decision even though they know how I feel Is this I’m just trying to expand this to a conversation And I’m not defending because I agree like I’m not saying my way is right I’m just saying like Do you can you reflect on yourself and go like, Oh, sometimes I do this because I’m the you’ll y in fact you’ll say to me sometimes, I’m not gonna tell you ’cause you’re just gonna be like, oh boo hoo like you’ll make fun of me.

And I say that in jest. It’s you know, like But you will withhold because you already know the outcome.

Scarlet
Maybe for smaller things, but not for bigger issues.

Mitchell
Right. So okay.

Scarlet
If I think it’s something that is going to hurt our relationship, then I usually just want to hash it out.

Mitchell
Right. Okay.

Scarlet
Rather than just keep it pent up. Because I know either way it’s gonna come out. In some form or fashion.

Mitchell
Okay.

Scarlet
So I guess I don’t do I don’t do or say things with the expectation of like changing the other person. Because sometimes I just react to how I’m feeling in the moment because I I feel like we all are selfish people on some level, and we’re just trying to like make ourselves comfortable. So we’re reacting selfishly.

And Sometimes that comes off as a little childish. For me, it can. I understand that.

I’ve taken ownership for that before in the past. Um but I don’t know. I never I don’t know.

I’ve never done or said or withheld anything I don’t with trying to change you. If that makes any sense. I don’t know if that even made any sense.

Okay. Because I know what you’re trying to say. You’re you’re saying like, well, I never bothered and I know what you’re I know what topic we’re talking about too.

Mitchell
No, I’m I really don’t have a secret hidden agenda.

Scarlet
We have a lot of if I’m If we’re gonna be open with our audience, like we probably our biggest issue is like your son, my stepson living with us has been probably the only issue In the re like in our recent history of like we don’t fight about a lot of things. But we will argue about that. That is our biggest disagreement.

So I do a lot of things. Because I’m selfish and I’m like, this makes me I want to be comfortable. This is my house.

And Like yeah, I turned off the internet because I want to watch our show in peace like we were doing last night. And I turned it back on two minutes later. Um Instead of texting like be quiet or you know something like my selfish self wanted to do that probably would have been super rude and you And would have had lash back because then it would have gotten back to you and then you would have been mad at me and th so I’m like either way, Mitchell’s gonna be mad at me.

Or get frustrated with me. So it’s like a lose-lose for me. So do I just do nothing?

And hold this like pent-up resentment and just sit in discomfort. I’m too selfish for that. I am.

Mitchell
Okay.

Scarlet
So. I didn’t do that. Do you want to add anything?

Mitchell
No, I I just I sometimes I just listen. What? You know how I feel and I I I’m I’m not here to hash all that out or to like whatever I’m trying to shed a light on whatever someone listening might go, Oh, that’s how my life is or isn’t or have something to reflect upon, something that makes it relatable.

Scarlet
Yeah, I know

Mitchell
So, okay, what else is on your mind? I’m not doing this again

Scarlet
I know. Anyway, I don’t even know how I got there, but I was trying to how I was talking about gardening

Mitchell
Yeah, you were. You brought in a couple of zucchini.

Scarlet
Well, yeah, because I wanted to circle back to that and

Mitchell
Yeah.

Scarlet
Are you okay?

Mitchell
Yeah, I’m here with you listening. You don’t look okay. That’s my that’s my new look.

I’m cultivating that look these days So you were trying to get back to gardening. This all started about an anger management thing that you were talking about me and something, the squirrels. I’m I’m still here.

I’m just we got stuff going on, that’s part of what I got going on today

Scarlet
Okay, well well In almost every recent episode you have complained about. Anyways, we have no good segue away from what we were the serious topic we were just talking about. Um I think what I will end with is being a

Mitchell
Oh you’re in the back of the.

Scarlet
If there are any step parents out there, it’s really tough. I feel you. You’re always gonna be in a lose-lose-lose battle. So Yeah, there’s that. I wish there were some sort of support group for step parents.

Mitchell
There probably is.

Scarlet
Yeah, there I mean there probably is, but this requires time and And I lack the yeah.

Mitchell
No, like everything.

Scarlet
And uh also I’m just as selfish with my own time and I don’t know. Is it virtual?

Mitchell
Can I a Zoom meeting? Come on, we’ve all been through COVID. We know how to do Zoom or Teens meeting.

Scarlet
So, I think our garden so far has given us a lot of romaine arugula. Yeah. A lot of squash, probably six.

Mitchell
Of the yellow summer squash.

Scarlet
And Kale. A lot of kale. Tomatoes are coming in.

Three cucumbers. One we waited maybe a little too long to pick. But it did have kind of a melony smell.

Mitchell
Uh well I mean they are in I think similar there’s a family, I’m sure.

Scarlet
‘Cause they’re all like ground crawling vining Yeah, but I mean I will just say like I’m pretty impressed. With your first two with the size of these zucchini.

Mitchell
Yeah, no.

Scarlet
Because I don’t know how I ended up with like twelve yellow squash plants and like only two productive zucchini plants.

Mitchell
Yeah So well that’s just a labeling issue when you’re planting the seeds. And I uh I let you kind of go to town and do your thing I was standing back on those, so I had my own thoughts. Labeling issue.

Scarlet
Did I label mislabel them?

Mitchell
I don’t think you use labels at all. And then you’re like, I’ll just plant them. And I was like, okay But there was little tags originally with each cut.

Scarlet
Anyways, look at these things. They’re huge.

Mitchell
Yeah

Scarlet
No, and then time w so Even for organic garden critics.

Mitchell
Oh we’re gonna have a whole well I’m not my concern is nobody’s gonna eat anything

Scarlet
I’ve been eating the stuff.

Mitchell
Okay, perfect. I ate a bunch of arugula today.

Scarlet
Good. Great. I ate romaine last night with my own.

Mitchell
I’m just saying like I don’t wanna see uh ’cause I looked in the fridge and there was a squash, it was already looking a little squishy.

Scarlet
Really?

Mitchell
Yeah, and I thought, well, this is our classic this is classic us. We accumulate stuff that we don’t use. So I’m hoping that we kinda use up the stuff that we grow.

Scarlet
I can bake it tonight and take it to work tomorrow.

Mitchell
I mean I’m not complaining. I was just like, oh, I was like, ah, the squash. Although I’m learning about the yellow squash and maybe we’re not getting good uh Um pollination.

Scarlet
Pollination. Yeah.

Mitchell
Maybe. Maybe or not. I don’t know. We have plenty of plants to try out, but we have blueberries. You didn’t mention we had blueberries.

Scarlet
Oh, blueberries?

Mitchell
I mean, uh like I said, well, because

Scarlet
We would get like three or four at a time and Max would just eat them as you would hand them to him. So I never really got to do any.

Mitchell
And then we’ll have raspberries, we hope, and beans for sure. Yes. Well I shouldn’t nothing’s for sure until it’s picked.

But the beans are hopefully gonna come. I mean I can see the beans. I just don’t know what to expect from the beans.

Scarlet
Yeah, I would say for year one, not too bad.

Mitchell
Yeah. We’re we’re we’re learning as we’ve learned what not to do. We’re learning as we grow.

We’re growing as we go. I think yeah. So Maybe less squash next year.

Scarlet
I mean Well, definitely. My bad. Well, no, I mean I don’t know.

Mitchell
Well, each plant is very prolific, so For all you gardeners out there.

Scarlet
And I know there’s some who But the zucchini is not as I don’t know.

Mitchell
Yeah. But I mean So maybe next year’s like two or three zucchini plants and only one or two yellow squash. Summer squash.

What do they call them? So And we’re still not sure of the Brussels sprouts, you know. Some of it, I don’t know if it’s timing versus some of the bugs we’ve been battling, but it’s been uh fun, end quotes.

I don’t know what to say because we have to we have to worry about we’re learning I haven’t figured out how to compost yet. We gotta amend the soil for next year at some point Well ’cause the soil gets depleted. So when you said oh I hey this is good new soil I’m like yeah but that the nutrients get sucked out of the soil to grow the plants So that’s why maybe we need to fertilize those smaller containers because they do not the soil it might be depleted already partially.

I don’t know. I’m not a I’m not a a botanist. I’m not a farmer.

I’m not a Paleontologist?

Scarlet
I mean I don’t think that’s what I’m saying.

Mitchell
Is that a is that a dinosaur person?

Scarlet
Um Yeah, I think so.

Mitchell
Sure. It’s someone who studies paleo the diet.

Scarlet
Oh.

Mitchell
I d I No, not that either. Paleo on paleontologist It’s a word we all throw out there. I just did, but somebody knows what it means. Feel like it’s dinosaur bones. No. Okay. Well

Scarlet
So we’re all caught off on Cape Fear. That’s the new show we’re watching.

Mitchell
Which I thought of we haven’t Lord of the Flies fell off Maybe you weren’t into that. And I’m like, maybe I need to walk and watch that one on the treadmill.

Scarlet
I don’t think I don’t feel like I was into it. That’s fine.

Mitchell
Cape Fear, good After we finished Widows Bay, working our way through four seasons. Second season. Another funny one, right? You enjoying second season?

Scarlet
Yeah. I do feel like it’s better than the first season.

Mitchell
Oh.

Scarlet
Which is what people were saying.

Mitchell
I’m not sure I feel that same way. But I mean I enjoy it. I’m not saying it’s not as good.

I’m just like, ooh. Cause I really like season one. So What else?

Scarlet
Well either way they’re both really solid.

Mitchell
Okay. And and we have yeah. We’re trying to make our way to maximum pleasure guaranteed

Scarlet
Yes.

Mitchell
Is that what it’s called?

Scarlet
Yeah, there’s a couple. And there’s like um some show called Paradise that I think is on Hulu. That is supposed to be really good.

Mitchell
There’s quite a few good ones out there.

Scarlet
Yeah. Just with limited time. Big mistakes.

That’s right. We finished that one, the Dan Dan Levy one. Yeah, that was like Little half hour show that was really good.

Mitchell
Yeah. And we’ve never gone back to revisit beef? Wait, what’s the name of the show?

The one about the beef restaurant. The cooking The Bear? The Bear, yeah, yeah.

Scarlet
Yeah, we haven’t gone back to watch that.

Mitchell
But we watched beef, that was the

Scarlet
There is a season two.

Mitchell
Of beef?

Scarlet
Yes. Well like it follows a different group of people.

Mitchell
Whoever’s a lot of people.

Scarlet
I’ve heard mixed. I’ve heard mixed reviews.

Mitchell
Alright, well I mean okay.

Scarlet
But yeah, Cape Fear, yeah, it’s a really entertaining thriller.

Mitchell
And if you’re familiar with the nineteen nineties movie or the earlier I think sixties movie. It actually has a f it has some Easter eggs or what do I want to say? Allusions to those for the people like me who’ve seen those even a cross not a crossover character but a same actress.

Like we get a little bit of that. It’s good I think in that regard. And it’s a series so they get to kinda stretch it out and it’s yeah yeah yeah.

I don’t know if I would you say it’s a slow burn I don’t know. I mean it’s a good build. All I’m saying is like it’s a good build.

Like you’re like, oh Yeah.

Scarlet
I feel like Javier Bardem does a really good job. He is so really creepy. Yeah, like he’s so creepy.

The sun is I don’t know who the actor is. I don’t know who else he’s I mean he can’t be more than what twenty-five years old. He’s probably playing a eighteen year old or something.

Yeah. But Like I said, like I said last last night, I was like, this kid has a bright future ahead of him because he is what they said about me. I know.

I yes

Mitchell
He is very The Year was 1993.

Scarlet
He is very good.

Mitchell
The play was labette.

Scarlet
Um I don’t know if I love who they picked for the dad. I don’t even know his name.

Mitchell
Patrick Wilson.

Scarlet
Okay. I don’t even know his uh you just told me his name. Like I’ve already forgotten it. Patrick Wilson. Generic.

Mitchell
He yeah. Well it’s funny because you could I could see I can think of a few other actors that are just the same as him and would have been just fine.

Scarlet
Will Arnett

Mitchell
Could have been the dad. Could have been the guy from the black lotus, the white lotus? Um played the North Carolina dad.

He’s actually a British black lotus. What’s the name of the white lotus? Oh.

Scarlet
He would have been good.

Mitchell
He like he would have been like You could have plug and play. You could’ve put him in.

Scarlet
I think he would have Maybe they wanted a younger dad, that’s why they picked him and that guy is Patrick Wilson’s my age, but okay

Mitchell
Well, I think that he’s just a little older than me.

Scarlet
But that guy you’re talking about is like probably almost 70.

Mitchell
No, I think he’s 60.

Scarlet
No, he was in the Patriot.

Mitchell
Yeah, I know. So was Heath Ledger And Mel Gibson. Or as I like to call him, the human cigarette.

Scarlet
Okay. The human ashtray.

Mitchell
Sorry, Mel, I know you listened to this show.

Scarlet
Why am I totally spacing on his name? Um You know your favorite Paul Rudd?

Mitchell
No.

Scarlet
No, no, no. Come on.

Mitchell
Too big.

Scarlet
Oh, Ozark and Oh, Jason Bateman. Jason Bateman.

Mitchell
Too big, but yeah. Too big of a name.

Scarlet
Oh, you think he would Yeah, that’s it’s not a that’s that role’s leading but not Do you think it’s because they they had to get somebody who wouldn’t like demand.

Mitchell
Overshadow?

Scarlet
Yeah, overshadow Javier.

Mitchell
Probably, but it’s hard to do with how Vierbar didn’t. Man, that guy just brings it, like, like in a way, you know

Scarlet
Like I’ll I’ll have moment he’s manipulating me.

Mitchell
Do you know what I mean? Like I’ll be watching the show and I’ll be like I don’t know if he’s faking this for like, yeah, maybe.

Scarlet
And then I’m like, no, no, stop. Like

Mitchell
I like still I’m not sure but it’s a little bit more.

Scarlet
It’s a wild re I’m telling you people, like it’s

Mitchell
Mm-hmm.

Scarlet
It’s it’s a must-watch. Is Martin s Martin Scorsese Steven Spielberg?

Mitchell
Like hello. Come on. That’s a no-brainer.

Scarlet
Apple TV, like it doesn’t get much better than that.

Mitchell
Tim Apple TV, as we call it around here. So thanks, Tim Apple.

Scarlet
Your your think us later. Okay.

Mitchell
Yeah.

Scarlet
New episodes every Friday.

Mitchell
I feel like we’re going ten. At some point though I will be it’s time to call it. We gotta call this one. Okay Marty? It’s time to finish the series up.

Scarlet
‘Cause there has to be this so we’re only on episode seven. We finished episode eight last night.

Mitchell
Because I’ve seen the movies, the two previous movies There’s gonna have to be this final component where they’re on that boat, the Galilee. Not that it has to be, but it’s gonna be like that boat on the storm is brewing. There’s a storm. We’re gonna be on a Cape Rear fear and on the river and they’re all gonna be on this boat toppling. So there’s gonna be I’m not saying for sure.

Scarlet
I hope he kills his dad.

Mitchell
But that did not be a component like that.

Scarlet
I don’t know who played that dad.

Mitchell
Wait, have you ever done dad? Yeah. That was Ron Perlman of um Beauty and the Beast, the TV show. Or if you want to go Sons of Anarchy, the the main dad of the Of okay, you don’t know Ron Perlman?

Scarlet
No.

Mitchell
Um, well anyways. Uh Hellboy. He plays Hellboy.

Scarlet
No.

Mitchell
Okay. Never mind. Anyways, y did did you recognize him?

Scarlet
No. Oh well I just kinda go like he looks like somebody I have seen in something.

Mitchell
Okay.

Scarlet
And then his teeth I was like

Mitchell
How generic could that be?

Scarlet
And I was like, I do not like this very well known. He needs to

Mitchell
Die Try think of what else you would have seen him in. But whatever. So you didn’t watch Sons of Anarchy ever?

Scarlet
Mm-mm.

Mitchell
Beauty Beast, the TV show from the nineteen eighties or nineties. Okay.

Scarlet
What was he the beast?

Mitchell
Hell boy. Yeah, he was.

Scarlet
Like, wouldn’t pick him out of a lineup for any bachelor show.

Mitchell
With the TV with the teeth though and the hair? Okay, well.

Scarlet
No. Anyway, so he’s very p he’s very pale.

Mitchell
Well, in that particular, yeah. So all right, well.

Scarlet
Yeah. Anyways, so Yeah, there you go.

Mitchell
You got it.

Scarlet
I have nothing else to say.

Mitchell
Nothing else. All good things.

Scarlet
I have nothing else to say.

Mitchell
Bringing it back. All right.

Scarlet
Okay, until next time. I’m Scarlet.

Mitchell
I’m Mitchell. And we’re doing the most. Bye. But you’re doing a reversey there. I did.
