Mitchell
Do you even remember how to do this? Not really. Okay.
Good, good. Then we’re starting fresh. It’s like a rebirth for episode thirty-nine, even though I put episode forty for some weird reason.
Pretending like it’s forty. It’s pre-40. Welcome.
Doing the most. Alright, I’m Mitchell. I’m one of the co-hosts here on Doing the Most with my lovely wife Scarlet.
Scarlet
Hi.
Mitchell
And we are back. We did take a well okay the webs it comes out every two weeks. You get that if you follow along and we took a week off, which means it’s been like a month for people.
Well and a month for us too, I guess. I don’t know, four weeks. You do the math.
Welcome to episode thirty-nine of doing the most. It’s a show that we bring to you every two weeks.
Scarlet
I know. I it’s crazy how hard it is to just cram in a 35 minute
Mitchell
I’m getting sick. Oh, you feel like great, which means I’ll be getting sick.
Scarlet
I don’t know. Just to like It doesn’t seem like it would be that much of a
Mitchell
Like yeah, you say to yourself, okay, now there is the part around all of it that I do, right? And you help today. Like this setup and the this and the that. But yeah, you’re right. But in it really, I mean let’s say let’s say it even just takes an hour. It’s still it’s funny to imagine that that takes uh you know like there’s still hard to do that and there’s people who do weekly podcasts I would do this weekly we literally just have have no other time to do a weekly podcast
Scarlet
What is it about becoming an adult that your time becomes budgeted?
Mitchell
I don’t know.
Scarlet
Like every hour of the day that goes by, you’re like, okay, now I have only this amount of time before I have to pick up Max from daycare. Yeah. And why is that always like the the thing?
Well or when the kids get home from school, I only have this amount of time to get X, Y, and Z done and to take care of myself and to get my workout in and to do all the things and to think about what’s what we’re gonna do for dinner and Oh now I have why why why am I deep cleaning the bathroom right now? Why am I doing that? I budgeted 30 minutes and it took an hour.
Mitchell
Yeah. And yeah, now
Scarlet
halfway I was like, no, I’m not gonna stop. Sorry.
Mitchell
Unlike the podcast, we might be stopping halfway. So I can go to an eye doctor. We will be stopping halfway.
It’s not gonna be done. Okay. The retina northwest.
And that’s important because they’re gonna see if I have uh if my non whatever if my freckle has grown inside of my eye because they’ve been monitoring this for years and so which made me think sorry not to takeaway I haven’t coming back to your point right there But I thought if they have to take my eye ever, if I have to get it enucleated, I think that’s the right term, isn’t it? Well anyway, I thought, would I go eye patch or prosthetic eye? What would you do?
Not for me, but yourself.
Scarlet
Mm the prosthetic eyes are pretty good these days.
Mitchell
I might agree with that. And I well I was like, oh I I just the eyepatch might be cool at first, but I thought well I’m I’m sure there’d be some eyepatch wearing initially Um there’s one guy I did see a prosthetic eye, one of a patient, and I was impressed because now they’ve got it to where it’ll move. Like it’s pretty impressive what they can do with the prosthetic eye.
There is an actor Who has a prosthetic eye and he’ll use it to his advantage. Sometimes they’ll put in different like uh ones that look like kind of clouded or like it they use it like you know he uses it to his advantage. So I’m like, oh that’s kind of cool ‘Cause for the longest time I was like, ooh, is he wearing a contact?
But I looked him up and I was like, no, he uh lost his eye in some, I don’t know, accident. I don’t remember the story. Anyways.
So I’d probably go prosthetic with some options, you know, but ’cause I think it’d be cool to have like one that’s like black with like a could you get a red light in it or something? I don’t know. You can have fun with it.
Not that I’m headed there, I’m just saying. Back to your point, ’cause I was thinking about you I’m always thinking about time. Like I’m always caught up in like Oh.
And what I today I was like lamenting the fact that so this is the day before we both are headed back to work and or back to work. Before there’s uh some work days that come up Yeah. And we work three days a week.
That’s the other sad thing that people, you know, we’re both nurses three days a week. But there are three long days. They’re you know, twelve and a half hour days, people.
But I was thinking In my head, I’m like, why am I always living in for living in or for some future moment? Like so for today I was literally thinking, oh The next time I’m gonna be able to just do some things for me is gonna be Wednesday of next week Six days away. That is literally what I’m looking forward to, is six days away.
That is sad, but that’s how, because I worked the next day, then I worked the next day Then I have a day off, but it’s it’s a Daddy Max day, and there’s not okay, I look forward to that, but like but I’m not doing anything for myself per se because I’m watching a five-year-old and And granted I can do some things for myself, right? But like within scope, right? I mean you might disagree.
Like I mean I can work out, I can do some things, but I’m not gonna get like I’m not gonna just go drive somewhere and I I don’t know. I’m just not gonna there’s certain things I’m not gonna do because I’m gonna be engaged with time with my son and that’s important uh for the five year old and my maybe if my uh seventeen year old’s around, we might do stuff too. But That’s like that’s not me time, that’s we time, us time.
And then Monday I’ll be working again. And then Tuesday’s family day, which is again, we’re all gonna be together. And then Wednesday will be the first time that I’ll have maybe some quiet moments.
Where I’ll feel like now I might be over exaggerating, but that’s how I feel. I’m like, why am I living six days in the future? Like that’s my Whatever.
Like I’m looking forward to that. And I’m like, wow. Then I did that thing where I was like, why can’t you just be happy in this moment?
Why can’t you live in the moment? You know, the old like, oh you gotta be like a dog and live in the moment. Like I don’t know why I can’t live in the moment, even though in that moment I was like You know, I I don’t remember what I was doing.
It wasn’t that fun though. The moment I was in, I didn’t want to be in. It might have been just showering.
Like that’s uh you know, like I was like, yeah, this is just
Scarlet
Well every time I saw you today you were just like Okay, Charlie Brown. Wow, wow. I know.
I’m sorry. And I’m like, oh, it’s probably because he’s going back to work tomorrow. And no offense, but you’re always such a downer on days like this.
Mitchell
Well, okay, I’m sorry. Well, it’s because everything feels rushed. We’re like, it’s like like you, you’re like, you’re cleaning and I’m Like tryna what am I doing?
Scarlet
Well that’s only because I’ve told myself okay I want the house for fall. I’m doing a fall reset. Why am I always doing something stupid?
So I’m like, what at once a week I’m gonna pick a room and I’m gonna deep clean that room. Right. So it’s Done and ready for because fall is my favorite time of year.
Most people do a spring cleaning. I don’t care about spring. Actually, spring in Oregon is terrible.
So I’m prepping for the fall because that’s my favorite time of year and it’s cozy and so I’m just prepping the house for the holidays, I guess The fall a days. The fall a days. The fall a days.
Um so first was the half bath, because it felt easy. Small. It wasn’t Somehow it’s the most disgusting room in the house.
Mitchell
Oh, I
Scarlet
‘m hoping.
Mitchell
No, no, I would think that would be my side of the master bathroom.
Scarlet
Okay.
Mitchell
The sink and counter and mirror on my side. I look at that every day and I’m like, I need to just clean I need to clean the whole mirror, everybody’s part in there. I just haven’t done it Because then it becomes like, well then it becomes how much time can I budget for this? But if I get caught halfway, then what?
Scarlet
Yeah.
Mitchell
Then you’re just like
Scarlet
But that’s steamer. That’ll save you some time.
Mitchell
I I mean maybe. I just use what they I have a whole bottle of elbow grease and it never runs out and I just use it.
Scarlet
What is a bottle?
Mitchell
Right there. Oh my gosh. Boom.
Right that elbow grease. Yeah. You you know what elbow grease is, right?
Yeah. That’s not that I you didn’t just hear that for the first time, I hope.
Scarlet
M no, I didn’t, but I thought you were talking about an actual bottle. I don’t know. I bet somebody sells a problem. For the people listening, he was flexing his arm.
Mitchell
I know but I feel like there’s probably somebody’s probably made a bottle called uh elbow grease.
Scarlet
I don’t know. I wouldn’t use it. It’s a it’s for
Mitchell
it’s for joints. It’s for stiff joints. Like, oh It’s for if you’re like the tin man, he could have used a bottle of elbow grease. So
Scarlet
You know, you you were talking about I got a lot of things I want to talk about. I want to circle back to the wedding because we were Austin and Audrey were visiting the other day. Mitchell’s oldest daughter and her new husband.
Mitchell
My son-in-law.
Scarlet
Oh yeah.
Mitchell
As well. I mean.
Scarlet
And then we were talking about all the stuff that happened at the wedding that they didn’t know about because they were like
Mitchell
oh yeah
Scarlet
in the w you know they were like in the moment.
Mitchell
And they were
Scarlet
in their wedding.
Mitchell
Right.
Scarlet
Maybe a little boozy. But um so And we were talking about all the drama that was going on. Yeah.
And like when I say drama, it wasn’t that dramatic. I guess. It wasn’t Jerry Springer dramatic.
Mitchell
Yeah, no, it was like not outward drama.
Scarlet
Then I was thinking of you at Market of Choice the other day And you saw
Mitchell
one of the wedding attendees.
Scarlet
Yeah. We’ll call her Katie I won’t use the last name.
Mitchell
But we’re well we’re gonna just use the name Katie. We could represent anyone, you see. That’s it. Could be any Katie.
Scarlet
Okay. This Katie was uh okay, first of all
Mitchell
Well I was already in the aisle.
Scarlet
Oh you were already in the aisle.
Mitchell
I was on the search for your golden eagle feather of sherry cooking wine.
Scarlet
Okay.
Mitchell
And I was already in the aisle. And she came down the aisle and then
Scarlet
And then backed out of the aisle.
Mitchell
And then was like right near me, within, you know, three feet like and I was kinda I was doing the thing where I was like, just I I recognized her and I was like M but she hadn’t made any eye contact or I was just like and I was you know, like you’re kinda doing that thing where you’re prepped, you’re smiling, like you’re are you’re you’re just ready to be like, oh hey, like
Scarlet
I feel like you won’t need to
Mitchell
Okay. I was like just getting ready to be like say something friendly or stupid, you know, like, oh, or like, I don’t know. And then she just like Kind of like did a little reverse-y u-turn all of a sudden and then went out of the aisle. It was like a weird like I was like, oh, like, okay.
Scarlet
And this is the same Katie who Was at the wedding.
Mitchell
In front of him. In front of him at the buffet line. Yeah. And you said I was like, oh hey Katie or said something, oh how’s Katie doing? Or hey Katie or something like that.
Scarlet
And she just looks at you.
Mitchell
Three times. And then
Scarlet
And she is Mitchell’s ex’s friend. And she was there to support your your ex? Oh or Audrey. And to be there for Audrey, but also she was sitting at the same table as your ex.
Mitchell
And her and her family I’ve known for I would say 35 years. Like that level of like I’ve known these people.
Scarlet
And so and you said it and you acknowledged her you said her name in the buffet line tw two or three times for her to just look at you like, Why are you saying my name?
Mitchell
Yeah.
Scarlet
And then the girl beside of her, Sarah, who is always nice to you. Even though she was kind of rude to you after during the divorce. Before and during the divorce.
Yeah. But she’s always been nice, cordial with you since when she sees you. She kinda looks at you and shrugs like I don’t know what’s going on.
Mitchell
Oh yeah, like a little I was like, okay, I kinda you
Scarlet
see the same Katie At the line of market of choice and expect to have a different interaction with her.
Mitchell
Well I even told you like maybe she didn’t know who I was and you’re like, you were the f father of the bride at the wedding she knew who you
Scarlet
that was that was the part that you were like well maybe she didn’t recognize me and I was like oh my god now you’re making excuses for Like who I consider now to be a terrible person and you’re just and I’m like, okay, she didn’t recognize that you were walking Audrey down the aisle She didn’t recognize that you were the father giving the toast for the father of the bride. She didn’t recognize you during the father-daughter dance. I was like, give me a break. I can’t.
Mitchell
Well, I mean I’m still doing that thing. Because you’re s
Scarlet
you’re you’re being such a nice guy and you’re trying to give people the benefit of the doubt when She’s just undoubtedly not a good person.
Mitchell
I mean, but I still feel like, you know, I don’t know. I don’t know why I’m excited.
Scarlet
So Katie, you’re out there. And then her daughter ‘s something that rhymes with the word runty. And well.
Mitchell
And I saw her daughter at the same market and I was like, oh, and she made a contact. I was like, oh hey, how are you? And I and we had a pleasant interaction with the daughter and I was just like and in my head I was like, this is so stran and I said well then I was the guy ‘s like, oh hey, I just saw your mom, but she probably didn’t realize like Well that’s what I did.
I just saw her. I didn’t have any like you know, we didn’t I don’t know. And then she was like, Oh Audrey looks so beautiful at the wedding.
And I don’t think she was at the wedding that this particular daughter, but yeah, I think she’d saw the pictures. But Very strange. I mean, so I don’t know what to make of that.
But I mean, but that’s but you were given examples, some of the drama or like the just the low-level drama, yeah I’m sure there was a lie of drama we don’t know about some other drama. I don’t know.
Scarlet
Yeah, probably. I mean if there was somebody in the grocery store who I didn’t want to interact with, I’d probably just like leave for the moment. I’ve been I’ve walked into the grocery store to like Costco and inner and there’s been people who I actually like and I’m just like I’m gonna have to go Because now I’m gonna see this person in every aisle. We’re gonna have to do that thing where it’s like, oh, fancy meeting you are again. I hate that.
Mitchell
Yeah, you don’t have the energy for that.
Scarlet
I don’t.
Mitchell
I just
Scarlet
no, I don’t
Mitchell
I and you know I often see people all the time that I know. And usually I’ll just kind of like I’ll kind of rein it in and I’ll be like, yeah, never mind Like but when we saw my friend’s kid who’s growing up at uh Oaks Park and I was like oh hey that’s totally I’m so sure and then I verified it was him but then I never like went up and said not that he was gonna recognize me. He was uh he has uh He uh anyways.
So it was just that interesting. Yeah. So I’m you but sometimes I am here’s what I always wonder.
What if that same person saw me and knew and then was like, Oh man, I’m just gonna try not to have any eye contact with the biggest.
Scarlet
Oh she totally did. A hundred percent that’s what happened.
Mitchell
Because then it’s like that strange, eh , I’m just gonna back out in a weird, awkward way in this aisle. Like I was just like
Scarlet
w why why be like that? You are the exact you are exactly the kind of person I grew up with and why I refuse to go to church anymore. Because you are the kind of people.
You are the kind of people who go to church and tell yourself you’re good people And you think you’re better than everyone else because you go sit on a pew every Sunday or whatever. Right. Like I I know the kind of person you are.
You
Mitchell
So, I mean, okay, and I’m still being defensive, not defensive, but I’m like, you know, I don’t know what if she was just having another bad day. Oh, anyways I don’t know what that is though. Like I feel hmm, I’m trying to think of if I could think of someone who irritated me.
Scarlet
Eddie.
Mitchell
Well I mean
Scarlet
It was giving Eddie vibes.
Mitchell
Who?
Scarlet
Katie.
Mitchell
Oh well yeah, yeah, yeah, it was. But like so I was just trying to think of like if there’s somebody from my past who makes me angry for some reason, if I would just I don’t know. I mean
Scarlet
No, because you’re just a nice person.
Mitchell
‘Cause I saw a guy at my high school reunion who I absolutely hated. Like I ha I mean I did. I hated Uh we can say we’ll just say we’ll give him the name Brent.
We’ll just make up an artificial name Brent and Hickson. We’ll pretend his last name is Brent. We’ll say it’s Brent Hickson.
Does it rhyme with Hickson? No, it’s Brent Hickson. I just I’ve just said like But you know that isn’t that like when they make up a name in a show Oh what’s the keeper ‘s identity?
We’ve changed the name and I’m always like, well how do I know you’ve changed the name? For all you know it’s like so anyways, I changed the name to Brent Hickson from whatever it was. I couldn’t stand him in high school.
There were some interactions and I always just wanted to like beat the crud out of this guy. And then I saw him at the uh thing and I was like, oh and he was just kind of a older, overweight version of himself. And originally I remember thinking like, Oh V but I realized and he was really nice to me.
And then I had that moment where I was like I bet he had no idea how much I hated some of our interactions. Like he didn’t realize what a jerk he was being to me that I was perceiving. So I was and I remember like laughing, going like all these years and here I’m thinking I would have liked to see him, you know If it been in a car accident actually he was in high school.
But um but um But like ultimately I was like, oh, like he his his story was different. Like his story wasn’t like, I couldn’t stand that guy, Mitch. He was such a XYZ.
He was just like, oh hey, like here’s that fun guy. And I was just in my head, I’m like I hated you all of high school, man. You were the one guy I just wanted like and now so I guess I’m saying that’s the best person I could think of that I’m so angry at right now.
I mean and I couldn’t muster up to be angry still when I interacted with him. That’s what I’m saying. Like even if somebody was really and I had s and I don’t have history with this guy.
We went to high school together You know? Um, so there’s that strange like, oh I just kinda yeah, I don’t know how if people are holding on to grudges, let’s not just in general Like, let’s it’s not assuming Katie, but like, you know, uh you’re a grudge holder.
Scarlet
Yeah.
Mitchell
I mean, yeah. I’m just saying like
Scarlet
tried and true.
Mitchell
And I am I mean, if I wasn’t caught here right now, I could probably think of some folks I’m holding a grudge against. I mean, that lady that cut me off today in traffic. I used to write down oh my god I used to write down license plate numbers and cars when they would when they would cut me up or whatever.
Scarlet
You can probably think of like past employee employer stuff, current employee employer stuff, like you can You could probably think of some of that stuff. I don’t know.
Mitchell
That’s true. Yeah, I mean but at the end of the day sometimes those in those interactions are people who uh that see that’s maybe what’s different. Those are people I work with.
And if I don’t like ’em and they make me angry, big deal because they were not friends, but these other people were people I was friends with or friendly with or have lots of you know, like where you’re like, Oh, how could this you know, you’re I don’t know, like it’s just strange. You get divorced and suddenly some people are just anti you I don’t know. I mean that was my that’s been my experience.
Not entirely, but
Scarlet
let’s hope I don’t see her out and Well, not that I even remember what she looks like because she was pretty generic. So unfortunately I remember nothing.
Mitchell
Here’s if I see her again, I’m gonna just I’m not gonna wait, I’ll just go up and see and then I’ll test the waters. Maybe less you know, third time will be the charm. Although it’s funny, I have not seen her for decades and in you know the course of you know a month I see her twice. So
Scarlet
I know. The universe is testing her.
Mitchell
Yes, she’s failed twice. But she got another chance. I’m gonna give her some hope. Well, okay. So we’re we’re gonna have to roll on to our next subject, which is also rolling on to a little break here.
Scarlet
Yeah We’ll pick back up where we left off.
Mitchell
Yeah. Or on a new topic. I don’t know.
Scarlet
We’ll see.
Mitchell
Yeah. We need to have a little like where I play a little interlude music. But you know. Okay. Do do do do do do do do dokay and now we’re back after that brief Hiatus Oh are we back? Oh we are we are now I mean we can be
Scarlet
close my rings.
Mitchell
Oh and
Scarlet
I was just thinking you
Mitchell
We’re back be and if you’re watching on YouTube video you can see my eyes look like I’m doing a bunch of psychedelics. Uh
Scarlet
I was gonna say a little possessed.
Mitchell
Well, but anyway, because I just got back. You know, I just got back from the iDoctor mid midway through the podcast. You lear you dear listener have no idea what’s going on that I left and came back and we’re still going.
Oh wait, and we are. Um it doesn’t matter the timer. Who knows?
It’s all out the window. Um they had a new like I didn’t think they were gonna dilate both my eyes. So it was like I thought, I don’t know, cause
Scarlet
I know I asked you, I was like, do I need to go with you for this one? And you were like, no.
Mitchell
They do this every time. I mean they I thought I mean it’s been a year this is the one that’s a retina place that they look at the freckle on the back of my one retina on my right eye Uh, which we already talked about. I’d get with their prosthetic.
Everything looked good. They were like, Oh, no changes. They I mean they literally do an ultrasound though on the eye and they they numb the cornea and then they put gel.
So I have like a bunch of gel and crud in this right eye right now. I don’t know So aside from being dilated, everything’s blurry, everything’s extra blurry on this side, but anyway, thank you. So um Yeah, we were shifting gears.
We already talked about time and how I’m looking forward to next week or not. Not living in the moment. Well
Scarlet
we were talking about wedding drama.
Mitchell
Yes, wedding drama. But oh you’re gonna keep going on that.
Scarlet
No, because we briefly lost I think did we do a podcast after the wedding And just say we went to I think we just like touched on it. Yeah. But then we didn’t never really like debriefed on it.
Mitchell
Yeah. But I mean
Scarlet
But I was like, maybe we need to get more into The family drama. So
Mitchell
in general? Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. Like the the bigger picture drama. The bigger picture. The long term. I know you were talking about maybe doing a Kind of like
Scarlet
an expose.
Mitchell
So yeah.
Scarlet
I love this stuff.
Mitchell
You want to do a dirty John kind of a like longer a 10 part series.
Scarlet
We we got a good one, guys Oh you just wait.
Mitchell
Just you wait, Henry Higgins. You will not believe
Scarlet
twists and turns you will never believe ‘Cause we ourselves were
Mitchell
Well, we’re still on the ride, in a way. I mean it’s
Scarlet
in a way.
Mitchell
Yeah.
Scarlet
It’s not as fun as it once was, but
Mitchell
There were some good times back in the day. Okay, so uh but moving ahead, there was something you brought up at the wine place yesterday and you’re like, oh, this should be good podcast fair and I literally forgot what you brought up. Do you even remember? And by the way you look very lovely because you’re just like a hazy glow over there on the other side. I really can’t see much else.
Scarlet
It’s like a built-in filter.
Mitchell
Yeah. It’s just like you just like you you’re glowing and that’s just probably because my eyes are. Was it the four
Scarlet
way stop?
Mitchell
That we were watching or just people.
Scarlet
Sipping wine.
Mitchell
Yeah. It went with downtown Westland
Scarlet
and
Mitchell
Yeah.
Scarlet
There was like oh in the traffic circle.
Mitchell
Yeah, it’s hard to say. There was just a and when you were commenting on my road rage like
Scarlet
Oh yeah, well yeah, okay. Yes, because You have this weird justice about road ra and like you take the like I used to be pretty ragey.
Mitchell
Right.
Scarlet
But Now I’m kind of to the point where there are some things in my life I’m reachy about, yes. And there are some grudges that I hold on to for life. Okay.
Yes. But like people in cars, I don’t know these people. I don’t know what they got going on.
And me ourselves yesterday when we were trying to get to Max’s first dance class.
Mitchell
Yeah.
Scarlet
We were I was like, if I had been driving And there weren’t cops around?
Mitchell
Oh. And if I hadn’t been having wine. Oh.
Were you quicker than me? You think you would have been faster? You were a little upset at one point because you were like, why don’t you get over in that lane and hop back in the other lane?
Scarlet
Yeah, because that lane was going faster.
Mitchell
It just okay. It just appeared that way. I don’t think people were gonna let us back over. Nonetheless
Scarlet
And we got there.
Mitchell
And Max was like, Woo! Yeah. My seatbelt’s not on.
It don’t matter. Hurry it up. We’re going anyway.
Scarlet
Get it on before we get out of the parking lot.
Mitchell
Yeah, I anyway. So
Scarlet
um we’re going to dance class, by the way. Uh yeah So not our proudest parenting moment. As But we got in a dance class.
We got in a dance class. He loved it. He’s the only boy.
I love that for him. As you were the only boy in many of your dance classes.
Mitchell
Yeah So it’s just how it ‘s more
Scarlet
boys in the arts people. Okay.
Mitchell
That’s yeah. Well I mean they are there, they’re just not at this younger age. But yeah.
That was good. It was a little hip hop dance class. Um we couldn’t totally see we had to kinda kinda crane to look in.
Scarlet
Okay, back to the roadridge. So you you just have this weird like it’s an injustice and I have to so when we were in downtown Portland the other day
Mitchell
Oh dear.
Scarlet
And I was like, oh no, I have to be in that left lane. And you were like, oh, I figured you were gonna have to be in that left lane to turn on to 205 or whatever it was. And so w people were turning but they were doing kind of the zipper effect.
Right. Right. And then there was so one person let me in.
And then there was the guy in front of me, and then I let a person in, and then I was gonna let the other guy in. And you were like, You’re gonna let the other guy in?
Mitchell
Yeah.
Scarlet
And I’m like What am I gonna do? Just like
Mitchell
let him go behind you because that see like he was violating the every other zipper. He’s like suddenly like I’m gonna do two. Like he was in he the way he was driving a car that just smelled of like Somebody who feels entitled to drive up really fast and then zip into a lane. That’s how he
Scarlet
You didn’t smell his car.
Mitchell
Okay, but I could say that it looked. It looked like it really Yes. Well I mean I probably I might have smelled. But like it was it was just bec yes, you’re right. Because it’s like I feel like there’s certain rules that we oughta follow and we should be like and then there’s like outside of that and I f Wanna enforce those I
Scarlet
But he wasn’t being like a douche about it.
Mitchell
But he was just going to
Scarlet
I was also just like
Mitchell
I mean yeah, I hear you.
Scarlet
I’m I’m
Mitchell
better than me.
Scarlet
No, I’m not. I’m just like I’m going to just like give myself anxiety and like like maybe upset people behind me when I could just let him in because he made a mistake just like I did.
Mitchell
I know I feel like he knew exactly what he was doing. Some people on that particular spot know exactly what they’re like we’re zipping up on the right lane all the way up and then we’re gonna jump into the left because they don’t want to plan ahead. There. But but the hold on.
Scarlet
Well okay it’s just like the people In Lake Oswego. Yeah. Okay.
Mitchell
Oof. Mm-hmm.
Scarlet
And I don’t get your thing with that either. Where you’re just like, I have to it’s called the Lake Oswego squeeze. It’s on forty three. You know You know that that right lane is gonna end right after that stoplight. People know it because they’d probably drive it every day, but people still get into that right lane hoping to zipper in As
Mitchell
they
Scarlet
when really it probably just slows down the traffic. Does it? I don’t know. It’s probably all relative, really. Because either you’re just gonna have a really big line backed up
Mitchell
What it is though is like you have a lot of people in the left lane who all we’re all like we saw the sign right lane ends, we all know what happens. This is not our first time here. There’s a lot of traffic everybody.
There’s a long line of cars and then the guy that comes barreling up three miles back just going like, oh yeah, I’m just gonna race up to the front because I’m more important than all you people who could redesign and plan ahead and now they just zip really quick into that lane. In in front, from the right lane. Now, sometimes there’s a lot of people in both lanes, and I’m like, yeah, let’s zip or let’s work together.
There’s a lot of traffic. But when people just have this weird like, oh, I’m just gonna do it. Now, I could hear the devil’s advocate, which is we would say Well there’s no law against being in a lane until it ends.
Like it’s like, yeah, I saw it said right lane ends. I’m gonna go until it ends. There’s no law that says you can’t be there.
I can I can understand that, but there’s just that consideration However, I feel like there’s a bigger picture item here. Which which
Scarlet
Well I’m not gonna be the douche who is going to just speed up and not let someone in to prove some principle that I’m the only one in that moment who really cares about.
Mitchell
Well but even when you see them racing up like sometimes Most people you can genuinely tell they’re like, oh, they just didn’t get it. And they’re just going slow, waiting to get in. And I’m always like, yeah, do it. It’s the guy that just like racing up, and you can tell he’s just like Ooh, he is just gonna go as fast as it takes to get in front of everybody.
Scarlet
I feel like we’re gonna continue to disagree on this.
Mitchell
But that’s okay. Well but this is I don’t know if I’ve ever brought this up on the on this podcast Or any other podcast for that matter. But this is an interesting, like bigger picture item, which would be this.
You and this is the difference between you and I, and I like that, okay Um, or do I? You are like, oh, I how can I be mean to a complete and total stranger? These people I don’t I don’t know these people driving their cars.
I’m gonna be nice to them. I don’t know. I’m just gonna be a nice person to all these people who do self-entitled Stupid jerk off things that didn’t ever take a driver’s test, they have no idea how a four-way stop works.
All these people it’s gonna be nice to ’em, you know. But people in your own household, you will passively aggressive them People who you live with, you’ll be mean, intentionally be mean. It’s an interesting like dichotomy.
I’m the exact opposite. I’m like I’ll be mean is the day is long to complete strangers on the road all day long. People in my household I’m like I sound I’m just not gonna be mean to my family and people in my in in that thing.
And there’s a difference where it’s like it’s kinda opposite. Do you s do you see the one do you see that difference?
Scarlet
I do, but I’m also thinking I don’t know what they have going on in their lives or where they need to be, as were people in my household. I know what they’ve done to me.
Mitchell
Wow. Okay, fair enough. It’s uh agree to disagree.
I mean, but we and I’ve mentioned this for some days though, if I’m in a if I’m in a okay mood, it doesn’t bother me the people on the road driving like morons. I’m just like, oh whatever Uh I’ll even do that. Like I don’t know what’s going on in their life.
Maybe they’re having a bad day. Maybe this maybe they’re trying to rush home to a kid who’s not feeling I don’t know. Some days I’m just like okay with it.
Other days I am I’m the enforcer Like my Aunt Marlene. But I don’t go the other way.
Scarlet
Who is who is a horrible person? We hate her.
Mitchell
Whoa! People listen to this show. Who might know her?
Scarlet
I hate her.
Mitchell
She is the lady who though this to give people an idea.
Scarlet
Ultimate Karen.
Mitchell
She will drive fifty-four miles an hour in the in the fast lane, in the far left lane Because she’s like, that’s the maximum speed people. Like she’s trying to enforce speed limits on a freeway by doing that. She’s that lady.
Now I’m not that. I’m not a I’m more like a considerate, let’s all work together, but like if you feel like you’re somehow special and you get to drive all around all crazy, then that’s different. But yes, she’s I’m not that kind of enforcer.
But I told you the day someone literally raced up all the way and then they literally were inching forward at a stop by and then they Tore out and turn they were on the left side of me and they tore out turning right in front of me.
Scarlet
See, I feel like I would only do that if like I had had to be somewhere. I don’t I probably still wouldn’t do that.
Mitchell
I was thinking of that. I thought under what circumstance would If someone was in a medical emergency, it’s not my job to be there, right? I mean, I’m not driving an ambulance.
I what I’m saying is like I can I was trying to think like, okay, oh, but what if it’s my kid and my kids hurt hit by a car. I’ve had that. Or like something I’m still thinking like, yeah, but is that ever worth like my job is to be safe and get there There’s nothing I’m gonna do because that’s not my job.
I’m not an emergency I’m not an EMS and she was not driving an ambulance or a helicopter, so that’s why I’m like um Ma’am
Scarlet
glad to hear she wasn’t driving a helicopter.
Mitchell
You might be in a big hurry, but you’re endangering my life and your life for whatever this is. And if you made him like so that’s where I’m like, if you’re late for a job or something else, hey, that’s Poor planning on your part. We were look at us, we were late, although we didn’t break any direct traffic laws the other day, maybe a little speeding on my behalf ’cause we were late to dance class.
But I wasn’t ever gonna jeopardize it at some level. I was more up for the challenge. But I wasn’t gonna make some crazy cut across somebody in front of somebody.
Yeah, and that was crazy. Anyway. Okay, so I mean yes, I understand what you’re saying though.
When you know someone’s history, then you feel uh you feel like knowing somebody gives you more like right to actually not b be happy with their behavior. Whereas if you don’t know someone like I think. When with them dilated So which I could agree with it’s I almost sometimes I say this sounds weird, it’s like you can’t like I don’t know, I can’t really say this, but I kinda sometimes think it’s like It’s like when you s when I say when we say we hate someone or something, like it’s like I feel like you have to have been able to love that thing, I feel.
Like to be that love of passionately, like it’s the polar opposite hate and love. Although I know that some would say fear is the opposite of love. Okay, I hear you people.
Thanks for reading the book. But what I’m saying is like To really like I hate that guy. It’s like well were you ever d how well do you know him?
Did you know him enough to be that you could also love him? I know that sounds a little philosophical, but
Scarlet
I don’t know. I think if somebody like ran over your child you would probably just hate him regardless.
Mitchell
Well yeah, I know I know I’m you’re taking I’m just saying though, I guess part of me sometimes feels like to be so what I’m saying but I’m on your side on this, saying like how could I be mad at someone who’s driving down the road that I don’t even know. Like that’s where I’m I actually was helping your side of this argument. I see.
Saying I feel like to have strong feelings about someone, negative or positive You you need to be able to like maybe know them, which I know that’s a little sort of deep and shallow at the same time, right? Because it’s like, oh, I don’t know what’s going on in this guy’s life. I don’t like his behavior, but I can’t hate him.
He’s just driving like a fool. But you’re saying I mean we work in a hospital.
Scarlet
How many guys do we work with who should not who have driven themselves to the hospital and who
Mitchell
are driving themselves home
Scarlet
shouldn’t be?
Mitchell
So I’m with you. So sometimes it’s like, oh You know, I know this person and men or like your mom better, right?
Scarlet
Your mom is wonderful, but maybe probably a little bit of a clueless driver.
Mitchell
But I love you, Mom and She drives our son around.
Scarlet
I know.
Mitchell
I don’t know that she’s clueless. I just maybe she’s not as um tuned in as she once was.
Scarlet
Yeah. I mean as people that s I
Mitchell
I’m gonna stop right now.
Scarlet
You can edit that out.
Mitchell
I you’re gonna have to. See that would be interesting just to see how it sounds Oh. Well, I mean, but it is that because of who she is or older age? I mean, I don’t know. I’m just saying like because some people will try for a long time, but I feel like what you what the Your mom
Scarlet
keeps losing her recipes. Yeah. Where are they going?
Mitchell
I don’t know She’s um hard to say.
Scarlet
They’re written out on a card
Mitchell
they’re handwritten. I know. I you know, I don’t know where they’re going.
I mean I because I think like don’t they only go in one spot? I mean, you know, and are they not in that spot? But we will all one day have to cross that road, that divide.
Which brings me, now that brings full circle I don’t even know what time. I can’t read it. Okay.
I can’t actually read what this says over here. But that’s okay. Which early, remember I said like I was um contemplating the idea like how time and I’m looking forward to next Wednesday when I have some time back for me again.
When there’s not it’s like the dance card is full between now and then. I got work, I got this, I got that, I got a lot of things that happened. But then I was like, yeah, why can’t you live in the now?
Because you’re always looking forward, but one day you’re gonna be dead, Mitchell. Like like we don’t like if we’re always if I’m I wanna say we if I’m always living in that forward looking forward and sometimes we laugh and like I’m just trying to make it the finish line of the night right But if I’m always living there and not living in the present, then one day I’ll be dead and it’ll be too bad. Because I will have spent my whole life living for the future.
I know that’s been talked about a lot, you know People talk, oh, the present is a gift or whatever, right? That’s why it’s a present or the now. Which however, wisdom from a five-year-old.
This is my thought here This actually I was like, I asked Max. We were talking about something. I don’t know what we’re talking about.
This is just like in the last week And I think this is so insightful in a strange way. I said, man, you know, oh well what’s your favorite day? We were talking like this and that.
And he said, my favorite two days are today and tomorrow. And I was like, I I was like touch, I was like, that is so like that is like perfect because it is. It’s right now and what’s gonna happen, you’re like tomorrow.
So if your favorite two days are today and tomorrow, I mean, you know, my favorite day is tomorrow in a week, but I just was like, man, that’s like You know, and I don’t know that he said it in he wasn’t thinking how I’ve made it philosophical, right? He’s just like today and tomorrow You know, it’s like right now and whatever we’re doing tomorrow. Like that’s I was like, this is so perfect.
So if your favorite two days are today and tomorrow, I think you’re doing good. That’s a good approach in my opinion So I was, you know, we were talking like, oh, Friday, Saturday, Tuesday. He’s like, no, my favorite days are today and tomorrow.
So uh that’s what I hear, right? From many folks.
Scarlet
Yeah, that’s what we hear.
Mitchell
Yeah. Is
Scarlet
that true? We’re biased.
Mitchell
Yeah, everyone has a little bias towards their kids I mean except to a certain point. ‘Cause then eventually they grow up and then you will have parents saving some mean things. I’m just saying every now and then you’ll hear a parent be like, Yeah, yeah, it’s not my brightest son, you know, they like But that’s just one attribute, intelligence, right, you know?
Scarlet
Yeah. The kid can’t dance though.
Mitchell
The kid yeah and he’s got great things to say. Okay. What else? Do you any more on your docket?
Scarlet
No no
Mitchell
no no.
Scarlet
I think next next time we’ll start our Expose.
Mitchell
Oh that’s uh we gotta iron that out. Maybe might have to piece this might take see, I’m a thinker and it might take more thought to plan and be like, okay, here’s the first chunk and then the next chunk and then the next chunk and the next chunk We’ll just start moving. So you have a you have a story arc that goes so from the beginning.
All right. Uh well Yeah, I can’t see anything, but I I mean I can. It’s just like you know what it is when you dy when your eyes get dil have you had your eyes dilated?
Scarlet
Yeah, it’s been a while.
Mitchell
Then it’s like then it’s like your Like I have to I can’t see things close up, but I have to do like my arm way out like as if I’m far sighted. I already am, but it’s like ooh It’s no fun. It wasn’t depressing though.
Scarlet
I know Max did say he was like, I need to go to the eye doctor, but I don’t want to do the drops again because they burned my eye. And I was like, he remembers that.
Mitchell
Wow Yeah, I had I had like my a two dozen drops today. Burning eyes and dilation and then desensitation and both eyes and then some new machine which I told the lady, I was like, Oh, I don’t think I did this machine last time and she’s like, Oh no, it’s new to us. I was like, Well it’s It’s a cool machine that checks your eyes and your hearing at the same time and she laughed because when sh they’re running the machine there’s this super high pitched like screeching all the time and I was and then when she’s done shut it off you know But I was just like, oh, you know.
You know me, ’cause I had to make dumb jokes. All right. Well.
Scarlet
I love your dumb jokes. Yeah.
Mitchell
Oh. I still can’t remember what you want to talk about the other day, but it doesn’t matter. We have come to the end of this chapter.
Scarlet
Well until next time, I’m Scarlet.
Mitchell
And I’m Mitchell.
Scarlet
And we’re doing the most.
Mitchell
Bye!
